Conservation areas have stricter planning controls than other areas. In particular, all trees in a conservation with a DBH 0f 7.5 cm are protected. Council permission is required to carry out any work on such trees.

In Bristol there are currently 33 designated Conservation Areas covering over 2700 hectares, 25% of the area within in Bristol City boundary.
