This was the scene of a tragic accident in September 2024 when a stone mason sadly lost his life whilst working on this section of wall. The road has been closed for a long time subsequently. The wall requires repairing. The trees which are the subject of this Application grow tightly against the wall which requires replacing and stabilising either side of the fallen section. The report states that trees and their stumps will need to be removed in order to gain safe and proper access to achieve a stable repair of this very old wall. It is not known at this stage if the Blue Atlas Cedar will need to be removed as well. That will become more clear as the work is done. It has been the habit of the University to replace any trees lost from the Stoke Bishop Campus even though there is no legal obligation to do so in current regulation of trees in a Conservation Area, and we hope that they will plant replacement trees somewhere on the Campus. The loss of the trees will be quite noticeable. Everyone is sad that this loss of life occurred, and their sympathy is with the family of the man who died here.
